Sussex County Chess Association Competitions: Views Sought10th August 2010Paul Buswell has been appointed as the new Tournament Controller for the SCCA and seeks views on the various competitions he will now be administering:-I have been appointed as the SCCA Tournament Secretary. I invite readers of the MSCL website to offer any suggestions for increasing participation in these events: suggestions which could be implemented this season coming. The competitions are: McArthur Cup, teams of six. Open to all clubs in Sussex with the holders (Brighton & Hove) exempt to the semi-final. The Paul Watson Trophy, teams of graded under 175. Open to all clubs in Sussex. The County Championship. Open to players who live in Sussex or who are members of Sussex clubs. Veterans Competition (entry fee £3.50). Open to players aged 60 or over on October 1, 2010, who live in Sussex or who are members of Sussex clubs. West Sussex Queen. Open to players graded under 180 who live in West Sussex or who are members of clubs in West Sussex. East Sussex Queen. Open to players graded under 180 who live in East Sussex or who are members of clubs in East Sussex. Barring radical change I expect the competitions to be 'knock out'; but in particular I seek views on rate of play, length of session, the desirability (or otherwise) of quickplay finish... It would help to know if you have competed in the past, and which present rules, or changes thereto, do or might stop you taking part. Please share this request with players without internet access. Replies by the end of August please. I can be reached at PaulBuswellChess@aol.com or at 51 Kenilworth Road, St. Leonards-on-Sea TN38 0JL. Correspondence Chess 25th July 2008 John Dodgson, Sussex Correspondence Chess Team Captain reports:-
Some Sussex CA news.
As you know Sussex participate in the County &
District Correspondence Chess Championships in two divisions:
Ward-Higgs and Brown-Pond.
These competitions drew to a close at the end of
June but some adjudications may be necessary before the final tables
can be constructed.
It is however already clear that Essex are
running away with the Brown-Pond: a score of +7 =1 makes them
favourites to win.
All the Sussex games are completed and I attach
the individual results.

Ratings from ICCF list October 2007.
We have improved on last year's performance by
one whole point.
Of course all our team played well but Phil
Stimpson's win against a Grand Master and Matthew Britnell's overcoming
a massive rating difference deserve special mention.
There is a cloud overshadowing next season: I am
a player short. If you want to be considered for the team or need
details, please contact me -

Correspondence Match v Middlesex 25th June 2008 John Dodgson, Sussex Correspondence Chess Team Captain reports:- I challenged Middlesex to a CC match as part of their centenary and in memory of Erkki Pesonen. For some years Erkki was a member of Haywards Heath chess club in the MSL and he represented Sussex in the SCCU <175 competitions. He also supported Sussex Correspondence Chess, regularly playing in the Email team (when he was domiciled in Portugal) on Board 1 or Bd.2. The match began on 21st July 2007 and finished recently. We played three games by email and three by post; I had hoped for a bigger match but six players was all Middlesex could raise. Individual results below.

Annual Meeting, Dorothy
Stringer School SUSSEX
chess players stood for a minutes silence as a token of respect and
esteem for Paul Watson at the annual meeting. This followed a warm tribute
to Paul from the president, Robert Williams, who praised his excellent
work for chess in the county for 30 years. The
patrons fee is to remain at £15, (this includes board fees for
county matches) and board fee at £3. A new treasurer, Peter
Kemp, of Crowborough, has been appointed, succeeding Paul Selby. Dr
Douglas Opie has stepped in as tournament controller as there were no
volunteers and Robert Williams is covering as secretary until a
replacement can be found. Mick Plumb has taken over as Sussex Chess News

Williams Grading WITH my
first year in this job behind me, I think I've mastered the fundamentals
of it. The only real issues that have arisen have been over ensuring
I have correctly identified players. It would be a great help to me if any
club fielding a new player in any graded event could anticipate this need
and provide me with details of the player as soon as possible. If the
player has a grading record elsewhere, what I need is the name under which
they appear in the grading database, their current grading and, if known,
where they have previously played and their ECF grading reference. If it
is a previously ungraded player, then just the name and/or initials they
want to appear in the database. (For any player under 18, their date
of birth is needed in order for them to receive the appropriate
"junior bonus".) In any event, it is important that each
club nominates someone I can contact, preferably by e-mail, if any queries
arise. Julie
Denning ECF
Delegate BCF THE
last meeting of the old BCF took place on October 22, 2005. It was
preceded by the sad announcement of the sudden death of Steve Boniface,
who many of you remember as a Sussex player a few years ago. All
reports and accounts were accepted and long-term plans approved and passed
over to the ECF. The BCF was retained as a Board, with the same personnel
as the ECF, and a reduced council, which would meet once a year at the
time of the ECF AGM. There are two reasons for its existence, to stop
anyone else using the name and to collect monies which may have been left
to the BCF by name. There
was an EGM on June 24, to approve trusts to be set to handle a very large
sum, more than £600,000, generously left to the BCF by the late John
Robinson. A sum over £100,000 would be placed within the ECF Legacy Fund
to generate the income for an annual grant of £10,000 to the British
Championship, which was his expressed desire. The remainder would be
placed in The John Robinson Youth Chess Trust and the income used
for Junior Chess (under 21) on a project basis,
keeping the capital in tact. As
the ECF is not a charity, the bulk of the money had to be specifically
used for Juniors in order to be exempt from inheritance tax. It
was announced that the long serving trustee, David Garrett, wished to
stand down. Mr Ray Edwards had agreed to stand and this was approved
unanimously. ECF THE
first AGM in October followed the BCF meeting and passed without any
problems. Jerry Walsh asked for a network of organisers to be set up to
communicate on a two-way monthly basis. He was thinking of organisers in
touch with the daily organisation, particularly junior. Information such
as Chess in Schools, which gives out government money, did not seem
to be getting through, although it was on the website. Any volunteers
please? He also warned congress organisers,
particularly junior, to beware of people from overseas
entering, using it as an excuse for a Visa. In a Greek Congress 11
Somalia juniors played one or two games, then vanished! FIDE and others
were not amused! Our Home Office probably wouldnt notice, but dont
rely on it. In
the finance meeting game fee was set at 45p.
Club tournaments will be 15p per player per game, quick play 22.5p. The
trial NMS system to replace game fee was in trouble. Some players were
objecting to signing the £1 guarantee form required by all ECF members,
and to giving their names and addresses to the ECF. A resolution to expand
it was rejected. At an EGM in June, it was stated the scheme would be
ended at the end of August as the conditions of the contract had not been
fulfilled by the Northern Union. A scheme was being drawn to allow any
union, or county to set up a similar scheme. The organisation would have
to ensure all players would become Basic members of the ECF and then not
pay game fee. This is similar to the old levy system which failed a few
years ago. Ray
Williams Junior
Chess DURING
the past year, Sussex Junior Chess has gone from strength to strength.
The organisation aims to promote chess amongst all juniors in the
county from beginners upwards, running monthly training sessions and
regular tournaments. County
teams play at all levels from U9 to U18.
This year, Sussex managed 2nd place in each of the U11, U13, U15
and U18 County Championships, with the U9 team taking 6th
place. The
year also saw a large number of U11 and U12 players selected to play for
the England Squad. Rhys
Cumming, Ben Blundell and Ben Silverstein were all offered places in the
squad at U12, and Jude Lenier, Polly Lambert, Joe Quinn and Matthew Payne
all secured a place in the squad at the U11 England trials.
Sussex now have an unprecedented 22 England players at U18! In
July, SJC ran the first ever Weald Congress and secured an excellent
entry, involving both adults and juniors of the highest calibre.
August
saw a number of juniors enter the British Championship, competing in both
junior and adult categories. By
the end of the first week, Sussex had three British Champions in the guise
of George Salimbeni (U13), Ram Mohan (U9) and Robert Fitzgerald (U8).
Jude Lenier was also runner up in the U11s, as was Alex Galliano in
the U12s. Andrea
Cumming Adjudications WE
had seven positions to ponder this year and one appeal against a decision.
The appeal was successful. Several
incomplete claims were received. It would be helpful if a contact
phone number was sent with the claim, so that a missing item, cheque,
return envelope, position can be chased up . Robert

finished second in the SCCU Counties Championship, with three wins and a
loss. The loss came in the first match against Kent, which went on to win
all four matches and take the championship.
Although the score was 6-10, the match was closely fought and could
have gone either way, until late in the session.
The wins in the other matches were by comfortable margins. Surrey
had a strong line up in the top half of their team, but tailed off quickly
at the bottom. Although it was perhaps the toughest of our three wins,
Sussex still won by five points. It was disappointing that Hertfordshire
defaulted five boards before the match, and a further one when a player
failed to arrive. In
the ECF quarter-finals, Sussex played Warwickshire at a halfway venue of
Princes Risborough. This was
a very competitive match, with the result in doubt until the end. It was
highly unusual that well into the last five minutes of the rapid-play
finish there were still six games in progress.
However, when the dust settled Sussex had won by 10-6. In
the semi-final, we played Essex. They finished third in the SCCU stage, as
they seemed generally to be struggling to turn out many players above BCF
175. However, they managed to
produce a much more representative team for this match
Unfortunately, the Sussex team was the weakest of the season. Due
to trying to avoid the England football match and it not being practical
to contest the reverse fixture in ECF U175 on the same day, a compromise
had to be made. Essex won 9½-6½. New
players graded over 175 would be especially welcome for next season. So
please get in contact if you are in that category or can provide a lead on
a potential player. While it is greatly appreciated that the top boards in
the U175 team willingly double up, if Sussex is to make a challenge for
national honours at both levels we need to be able to fill nearly all
boards by over 175 players. Richard
Almond and Paul Selby
U-175 THE
loyalty, the commitment, and the standard of play of the team is enviable.
This season has been the second time that the BCF/ECF championship has
come to Sussex.
